My first CD as a leader is on its way!

The as-yet-untitled project has some great playing from my friends Dana Landry on piano, Steve Kovalcheck on guitar, and Jim White on drums. It includes several of my original compositions and -bonus!- all of the lead sheets will be available here on my website.

Look for it to come out in late February!

10 October, 2008 | Still more airplay...
"island Life" was played 474 times on radio stations nationwide from January-March 2008! That, and another of my songs- "1, 2, 3" - (both from Dana Landry's 2005 Grammy-nominated CD "Journey Home"), are still being heard nationwide on XM radio, digital music services, Rhapsody, and etc. Both can be downloaded from iTunes or Amazon.

Two of my new big band pieces which were premiered this summer will soon be available through UNC Jazz Press!

"...And Especially..." is a bluesy hard-bop swinger written for Hank Jones's drummer Ronnie Bedford, and "T's Waltz" is a straight-ahead piece featuring saxophone.

05 August, 2008 | World Premiere w/Nnenna Freelon
I'm in Steamboat Springs, CO, working for a week with Nnenna Freelon and pianist Mike Garson. We just premiered a new piece of Mike's and are playing another concert this weekend!

21 June, 2008 | Debut of New Compositions!!
This summer will bring premieres of three new works! "Full Moon Tea Party" (Britt Festival, June 24), "...And Especially..." (Yellowstone Big Band, July 12), and "T's Waltz" (Colorado Jazz Orchestra, July 29).

we're finally finishing up our new trio CD "Memphis Skyline" (w/Dana Landry & Jim White). We do tunes by some of the great Memphis jazz musicians...many of whom the three of us know/knew/played with, etc....(like Charles Llloyd, Harold Mabern, James Williams, Frank Strozier, Hank Crawford, etc....) 03 April, 2008 | Debut of New Compositions!!
I've been focusing on some writing projects this spring! A new big band piece will be premiered Saturday, April 26 at the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival, and On Saturday, April 5 you can hear a few adaptations for orchestra at the Union Colony Civic Center.

In August, I'm performing with six-time Grammy nominated vocalist Nnenna Freelon! On one concert, we're premiering a new composition and the following week giving a concert of Great American Songbook standards!

13 August, 2007 | Beginning my new job as Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies
This fall, I am joining the faculty of the Universitiy of Northern Colorado on a more permanent and full-time basis. As Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies, I will be teaching the Improvisation and Arranging course sequences, directing ensembles, and teaching other courses from time to time.

I will be making the rounds of several educational jazz festivals in spring 2007. I'll be heaading out to the huge Reno Jazz Festival in April (my first time) and I'll be returning to the University of Kansas Jazz Festival and the Tri-State Jazz festival (at James Madison University in VA) in March. I'll be at the IAJE Conference in NYC Jan 11-13, and will be performing as a guest with UNC Jazz Lab Band I (3:00pm Friday, 1.12.07). Also, the great vocal group Afro Blue (from Howard University) will be performing one of my arrangements (3:00 Thursday, 1.11.07)

15 October, 2005 | Grammy Nomination!
The title track from Dana Landry's CD "Journey Home" (Summit Records) has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Original Composition category. The piece was written by Maria Scneider and re-arranged for quintet by Dana.

I'm still trying to reorganize my pianoless quartet. I'm working on material and considering what musicians could be involved. I hope to have the band up and running again in the spring....
